My interest
in fire fighters and fire houses probably began when I was a
young man, about age 10. My grandmother would take me to visit
the St. Bernard fire house – the old one, that stood about 3
feet from the I-75 bridge over Vine Street. It was replaced
after discovering that vibration from the highway was
deteriorating the structure. Anyway, a friend of the family
named “Art” worked as a fireman there – he’s probably retired
now but, wish I could meet up with him someday and thank him for
his time and courtesy shown to us back then. Art would show me
around and introduce me to all of the fire fighters, the
apparatus and tools used back then to knock down structure
fires. It was all very intriguing to me, even at such a young
age. I got to check out everything on the trucks, ladders and
ambulance. He wisely wouldn’t let me slide down the pole
(insurance regulations – go figure, even back then) but was
always willing to demonstrated how it was done! He got a kick
out of me when I showed him my TEXACO Fire Chief hat with real
intercom function and the real cool scale model toy fire truck
(huge - 3’ in length) that did everything except hold real size
human fire fighters and drive to alarms.
Later in
life, I remember while visiting my uncle Don, intently listening
to his fire/police scanner. Strange, but, it made me feel like
I was somehow personally included in the vital information being
shared regarding the situation at hand. It was the next best
thing to being there in person.
Today, I sell
service for Integrated Protection Services, Inc., a full
integrator of security systems including fire alarms, CCTV, card
access and nurse call. It’s a very rewarding position, one that
has me more overall satisfied than ever before. We’re a great
mix of people who do damn good work and we’re real proud of it!
More specifically, my position involves engaging prospects and
existing clients into multi-year Agreements to conduct required
annual NFPA fire alarm testing. With this service, the systems
are tested and inspected to keep them properly functioning and
with a minimum of false alarms. Perhaps a small bit of my
efforts provide some relief to Cincinnati Fire Department false
alarm calls.
It is a
pleasure to be a member of BOX 13 to share and hear stories from
others with similar interests. Always willing to help out
wherever needed, please feel free to get me involved. As an
adult, I am fascinated with the functions of fire houses and the
brave fire fighters who work within.

ANITA HOLZ, BOX 13 DISPATCHER DIES
Anita
Wende Holz widow of the late Pat S. Holz longtime member of BOX 13
Associates of the Cincinnati Fire Department died on February 5,
2007. Anita was born in Cincinnati June 9, 1918. Anita acted as
dispatcher for BOX 13 initiating the calls to members to advise them
of working and extra alarm fires and other emergency operations
being carried out by the Cincinnati Fire Department. Anita was
always tuned in to the dispatch channel and stayed up until she knew
all Box 13 members were home safely. Anita’s husband Pat was the
last fire department employed dispatcher of the Cincinnati Fire
Department retiring as Chief Dispatcher. He had finished #1 on the
test for the position. All subsequent dispatchers have been
communications division employees. Pat preceded Anita in death in
1988.
Anita was always at Pat’s side on his
many visits to out of town fire departments, fire dispatch centers,
fire musters and conventions. They especially enjoyed the
International Fire Buff’s Association conventions. Anita had the
distinction of being one of the very few women to be named a Special
Fire Prevention Inspector by Ohio State Fire Marshall Emmett Brush,
Jr. in 1957. Anita tolerated Pat’s many fire related collections
not the least of which was his complete working street box
notification system. One pull of the box and Anita’s home was beset
by buzzers, clanging bells and other commotion.
